That's a very good point. You can overcome athleticism of opponents just by making sure that you are trying harder than them. And that means, even if you are a good player, if you don't work hard you can still be beat by someone who wants to work harder than you.

Great story about Charlie Hustle. Thanks.
Just watched a high school girls game a couple weeks ago. There was a loose ball off to the corner that came off the rim. The defender kinda walked towards the ball while 2 girls from the other team ran past her to retrive the ball. It was a playoff game and the little things like that caused the other team to win in the fourth quarter. The other team was up by 10 at the end of the third. I can never emphasize enough how extra effort wins games.

Good stuff Luke! Screen usage is such an overlooked fundamental. The number one problem I have with girl's players on using screens is the player using the screen doesn't want to make contact with the screener. In order to fix the "discomfort" of not wanting to make that contact, I always force the cutter to put their shoulder on the screener when we're drilling this in practice. The other problem I see with youth players/coaches is that the kids don't understand how to be patient when receiving a screen. So many young players make exchanges rather than body on body screens.

Check out this drill from Rip Hamilton on moving without the ball:

These are all great points Mike. Caleub for example goes to the school at 6:00 am 4 days a week and does his Alan Stein workout and then he shoots/works on moves for a good 45-50 minutes before he goes and takes a shower and eats breakfast. He also tries to get to the gym at 4:15 for a 6:00 game so he can get up some shots before the game. I was a little nervous that he would get wore out, he is only a 7th grader, but I think it has actually helped him come game time. Now it's going to be a little harder for him to get shots up before every game now that boys/girls basketball has started in the HS ranks. But I know he is still going to try and sneak in

I'd also like to add that him getting up in the morning has also helped me. Since I have to run him out to the school, by the time I get back home about 6:15 I'm wide awake so I have been working out on the Eliptical on days he goes. So YES parents, this will also benefit you, take advantage of it!!

Nice article & drill, Mike. I agree with you on the 1 on 1 thing. A lot of coaches needs to spend more time on that. For a few years, I didn't emphasize 1 on 1 and I noticed that our players had a tendency to rely on help defense too much.

I know my son really looks up to Mike Lee, if you read his blogs but have never met him I strongly encourage you to try and get to one of his camps. If your son/daughter loves basketball then they need to work with Mike and the people he brings with him. My son has been around Mike for two years now and I can tell you he puts Mike as high on his list as he does professional players. He thinks the world of Mike. Mike has not been able to work individually with my son for a while now but Mike found someone to work with my son on an individual basis since he can't. To me that shows how much he believes in my son to go out of his way to find him a workout partner. Thanks Mike!

Mr. Stein,
I enjoyed your "Choices" article very much. As a former Marine, I have encouraged my two sons to work hard and achieve goals. Discipline, Dedication, and Integrity are traits I tell them to use when making choices.
I believe kids need to understand the choices they make. Good and bad ones, they have to realize that they are the ones responsible for their actions. One example I use at home is balance between sports and school. Whether they get a good grade on a project depends on the effort. Or did you work/ improve on ball handling during the off season. It's like Coach Valvano said, work hard or do not work hard. Thanks for the great articles, I was motivated to write you and tell you to keep up the excellent work.
Regards,
Steve Hanson

From Alan Stein:
I understand where he is coming from regarding getting “cut”… but bottom line is the greatest player in the history of the game did not make the varsity squad as a sophomore and played JV.

Point is; MJ used that “failure” to motivate himself.

Feel free to share my comments with “jimmyv”

It's a cliche' ...and it's not true.

Michael Jordan was NEVER cut from his high school basketball team. It's a myth. Always has been.

And reporters and media outlets that don't verify facts are guilty for perpetuating the myth as well - might as well use Wikipedia as a fact checker!
